Burial Ground Mapping

The Clachan Graveyard mapping project was conceived by the Applecross Historical Society and is being carried out by the Society under the auspices of the Applecross Landscape Partnership Scheme (ALPS).

the aim of this project was to record and disseminate as much information as possible about the Clachan cemetery in Applecross, and about the people who have been laid to rest there. 1,090 records have been recorded and added to an online searchable database; this was done by recording gravestone inscriptions, collecting biographical information and photographing the gravestones, as well as speaking to local people and building a picture of each person and the way they linked to other members of the community. This fantastic record will help genealogists, historians and descendants around the world to see the final resting places of people who were important to them and allow people to pay their respects. There is a website which not only hosts the database of names, it also details the history of Clachan and the area surrounding it.

The project website's interactive, searchable map and database mean that it will be possible to locate a grave before you arrive in Applecross so that visitors can go directly to the grave they wish to see without having to search each stone.

It is not the intention of the Applecross Historical Society, the Applecross Trust, ALPS, or any users of the Clachan Church building to cause offence or disrespect so we can trust that people will understand the motives behind this project and treat Clachan with the respect it deserves.

Please bear in mind that this information is being recorded so that it will be safely preserved for future generations; that means that graveyard visitors should be very careful when, or even avoid cleaning gravestones in any way, a process which may leave stones more vulnerable to weathering and erosion.
